What is the DELF?
The DELF (Diplôme d’Études en Langue Française) is an official diploma awarded by the French Ministry of National Education. It is designed to certify the French language level of non-native speakers and is internationally recognized by universities, employers, and government institutions.
This exam assesses your French skills according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR), from level A1 to B2. If you’re aiming to certify a more advanced level (C1 or C2), you should consider taking the DALF.
What is the DELF for?
The DELF is ideal if you:
- Want to study or work in France or a French-speaking country
- Need to officially validate your level of French
- Are looking for a recognized certification for your CV or immigration purposes
Another advantage: the DELF does not expire, making it a long-term investment in your academic or professional journey.
What is the DELF exam like?
The DELF is divided into four mandatory sections, each designed to assess a specific language skill:
- Listening comprehension (20–30 minutes): listen to audio clips and answer questions.
- Reading comprehension (30–60 minutes): read texts and answer questions.
- Written production (30–60 minutes): write texts appropriate to your level.
- Oral production (15–20 minutes): a one-on-one interview with an examiner.

Each section is worth 25 points, and you need at least 5 points in each part to pass.
